When Tom was twenty, he was playing with such a star as Arthur Blakey and touring with big bands of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. Then as a member of the ensemble of one of the pioneers of funk and hard-bop, pianist Horace Silver, and in collaboration with Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespi, Charlie Hayden, Lee Konitz and Phil Woods,
In the US, Tom is recognized as the “Trumpeter of the Year”, Newsweek called him a genius, and Entertainment Weekly proclaims him “the arrival of Harrell as a composer and main trumpeter of his generation”.
Now Tom is seventy-one, on his account is 260 albums, and he does not release a pipe from his hands, touring the world with concerts.
Dennis Adu, Ukrainian trumpeter: “Tom Harrell is one of the most melodic jazz trumpeters among the people who live on the Earth. I have listened to him for the first time in my life on February of this year at the Village Vanguard in NY with Ethan Iverson Trio and I’m still impressed. Each melody separately, which he plays, is so musical and perfect that it’s hard to believe that you can play like that at all. The first time I heard it on video with New York Jazz Giants (Faddis, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, Lee Tabackin, Ray Drummond, Carl Allen). Moreover, he played on this record fantastically. The sound was clear, the melodies strong, and the articulation astounding. If someone asks me whether it is worth going to Tom Harrell, I will answer “Definitely! He is an amazing person and musician, and no one knows how long we can enjoy his playing”. If you want to listen to real jazz without a circus, then you are on Tom Harrell performance!”
Ambrose Akinmusir, an American trumpeter: “As soon as he lifts the pipe up, it’s almost a meditation. You see pure concentration”
Philip Charles, editor of the French magazine Jazz Magazine: “A scrupulous selection of notes and a thoughtful understatement in self-expression turn him into a sound sculptor who has a magical, without exaltation, charm.”
Harrell travels to the capital accompanied by the jazz titans like Ugona Okegvo (contrabass), Mark Turner (a saxophone) and Adam Cruise (drums). An eminent band will play at the walls of the famous for its jazz performances The Caribbean Club.
About Harrell, they say, “he creates music that catches the wind.” His music is powerful, fluid, and full of soul and passion. You can make sure of this on August 17 in the Caribbean Club.
